Ethan is only 16 and had been homeless for the past two years. Currently he is couch-surfing and staying at friends’ places, but he lived on the streets and slept in parks for a few months before moving to Sydney’s outer suburbs.
Earlier this year, he was referred to Creative Youth Initiative (CYI) in order to pursue his passion for music. Ethan has always used music as a vehicle to express the pain of his childhood and the trauma of being separated from his family. His resilience shines through though, and he has retained a very positive outlook, given the challenges he deals with on a daily basis.
Since he started the Sounds of the Street music program, he has always been very supportive of his peers, encouraging them to see the ‘sunny side’ of life. Ethan is now looking for fulltime work and would like to one day become a mentor for other young people struggling to find their way. He also aims to record an E.P. during his time at CYI and work on his live performance skills.
Ethan is a true inspiration to all the staff and a perfect example of a young person who, thanks to your help, has been given the opportunity to flourish by creatively expressing himself in a supportive and enabling environment.
