News: The Govenor's Seat

A Unique Gift lovingly crafted by Sydney renowned artist Robyn Ross will benefit the Charity helping Youth in Crisis, the Sir David Martin Foundation.

A Unique Gift lovingly crafted by Sydney renowned artist Robyn Ross will benefit the Charity helping Youth in Crisis, the Sir David Martin Foundation.

These gifts will be known as The Governor’s Seat. Each seat has been uniquely and carefully created for occasions of celebration or to recognize retiring or outstanding achievers in the business or corporate or community spheres. The Governor’s Seats are a unique way of saying thank you and Robyn will help you to create your individual artistic and unique gift (www.robynross.com.au).

Each “seat” is an original artwork created onto the form of a chair. The first series is of three iconic people from history. They have been artistically painted onto the linen upholstery of a beautiful French style, balloon backed chairs and donated to help the fundraising of the Foundation.

A further series will follow; all will be original Governors Seats artworks by Robyn Ross and can be commissioned to your specific and particular details or theme. A percentage of the price will be donated to the Sir David Martin Foundation.

Chair 1 Arthur Phillip – born 1738. Captain Arthur Phillip was the first Governor of NSW and arrived in Botany Bay with the First Fleet in 1788. This is the very first Governor's Seat and has been designed specifically for Government House NSW. It will be presented at the dinner on the 18 June 2010 to Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir, AC, CVO, Governor of New South Wales by Lady Suzanne Martin wife of the late Sir David, to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Sir David Martin Foundation.

Chair 2 Napoleon – born 1769. A detail of the richness and power portrayed in famous Ingres painting c. 1806 “ Napoleon on his Imperial Throne” has been suggested on this seat and has the addition of 24ct Gold trim.

Chair 3 Cleopatra - born 69 BC. The well known Egyptian Queen is represented in classic Egyptian style, perhaps in the “Garb of Venus”. The seats’ first line of Hieroglyphics spells out a message (can you translate the message?).

Chair 4 Frida Kahlo - born 1907. Her confessional paintings and political enthusiasms place her as one of the most important 20th century woman artists of the Americas. Represented on this seat from one of her self portraits is from her work “Still Life with Parrot” 1952.

Chairs 2, 3 and 4 will be available by auction at the 20th Anniversary Celebration fundraising dinner of the Sir David Martin Foundation, to be held at Scots College on June 18th 2010.

You are invited to attend and details of the event can be found here.

Ralph Ransom

I have just come back from the farm and was just delighted to see the new building going up at a fast pace. I had remarked how quick this seemed to be going up. It was in the conversation that I was reminded that it had taken more than two years since I first had the conversation with Warren, the previous manager. It reminded that we often work hard at something for a long time before we see any results.

Whilst I was at the Farm there were a number of new students starting the program and I know that they were finding it hard. They had only been there a day or two and still going through really difficult emotions and not knowing how to deal with it. They were upset and angry they were sowing tears. In talking with the students who were getting ready to leave they know great the rewards and full of hope. I am still amazed after all these years at how profound the impact of Triple Care Farm is on young people’s lives. I could not help feel joy and pride when I left at not just the progress of the building but of the young people whose journey in live is beginning.

Event: Cook for a Cause

Cook for a Cause and help youth in crisis!

Raise essential funds for Sir David Martin Foundation to help 'youth in crisis' by sharing a meal with your friends and family. Take the time to sit down around the dinner table with your loved ones to eat, laugh and communicate.

Research conducted by The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University over a decade consistently found that the more often children have dinner with their parents, the less likely they are to smoke, drink or use drugs. Download the full report here.

Simply put: Dinner makes a difference.

Open up the communication lines for discussions about mental health issues, drug and alcohol awareness and other youth issues that may be affecting the people you care about.

Host a dinner party, Sunday BBQ or even a high tea! The choice is yours. Be creative!

The 14th annual "back-to-school survey" continues CASA’s unique effort to track attitudes of teens and those, like parents, who influence them. Through this survey we have identified factors that increase or decrease the likelihood of teen substance abuse. Armed with this knowledge, parents, teachers, clergy, coaches and other responsible adults have been better able to help our nation’s teens grow up drug free.

News: Sometimes all they need is a chance... Dean’s Story

Dean was very young when he first came to South West Youth Services. He had left school in Year 8 because of his behavioural problems. He had grown up in a family full of violence, mental health problems and substance abuse.

To try to escape the problems he was facing at home, he commenced using alcohol and drugs at an early age. He turned to crime to get money for drugs and alcohol and had become entrenched in this unhealthy lifestyle.

Without education or vocational training, he could never escape. Once Dean was referred to South West Youth Services he began a series of programs aimed at supporting and encouraging him.

Counselling was one of those programs as well as an education program called DRAW (Developing Reading And Writing). From here Dean could begin to set more ambitious goals.

Dean is now 18 and is attending TAFE three days a week as he completes a foundations course on construction. Dean no longer uses drugs or alcohol and has not been in trouble with the police for over a year.

News: "I'm going to Uni" announces a Triple Care Farm Graduate

When students arrive at Triple Care Farm, they cannot imagine how amazing life can be. All they know is they want it to be better and they are prepared to work hard to achieve that.

When students arrive at Triple Care Farm, they cannot imagine how amazing life can be. All they know is they want it to be better and they are prepared to work hard to achieve that.

Imagine the excitement when all their hard work is rewarded. This is certainly the case for Katie. When Katie arrived at Triple Care Farm she had misused alcohol and drugs for many years and had a number of physical and mental health problems.

During her 4 month stay at the Farm, Katie attended the Cultural Experiences Program to find out more about her indigenous identity. Through this Program she discovered the Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Education.

Located in the Northern Territory, it offers courses for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in natural and cultural resource management. This became Katie’s goal – to complete an Applied Sciences degree majoring in Natural and Cultural Resource Management.

Katie worked hard to gain the grades required for acceptance into the course. Meanwhile, the counsellors at Triple Care Farm assisted her to find suitable accommodation and on-going support.

Just prior to graduation in December, Katie was advised she had been accepted into the course. When she rang her father to share her great news, he cried. Katie is the first person in her family to go to university.

Katie plans to use her degree to become a National Parks Officer or Aboriginal tour guide. To help her with the cost of her studies, Katie has been awarded a scholarship from Sir David Martin Foundation. But this is just the beginning of Katie’s dreams. She now has the goal of studying for her Doctorate when she has finished her first degree.

The work at Triple Care Farm really helps young people make significant and permanent changes to their lives. It teaches them that dreams can come true and that anything is possible with hard work and determination.

News: The calls for help are overwhelming

The Today Show provided us with a remarkable opportunity to promote the work of Triple Care Farm in the hope of gaining further donations.

The Today Show provided us with a remarkable opportunity to promote the work of Triple Care Farm in the hope of gaining further donations.

For the first time, a reporter and camera crew were permitted onto the Farm to follow the progress of a couple of our students. It was a very honest portrayal of the difficulty of the program and the breadth of vocational, educational and counselling programs provided during their stay.

The Today Show followed the student’s journey from when they arrived until after they returned home. In terms of donations, it was very successful but what we didn’t expect was the enormous number of calls from young people in need.

At this stage, we can only offer 80 places a year at Triple Care Farm. Yet in January alone, we received in excess of over 500 calls requesting access to the Farm’s award winning programs.

Jannine Jackson, General Manager of Sir David Martin Foundation says “The calls for help can be overwhelming. We have been talking about plans for a second Triple Care Farm style program but now we really would like to action this plan. We are really starting from scratch so we will need help with everything, from purchasing land to the construction of buildings. Once this is done, we will need to ensure we have sufficient funds to cover the ongoing costs to run the second farm and its programs.”

Typically, a student takes 3 months to complete the program at Triple Care Farm and has another 6 months of on-going support once they leave. This costs $25,000 per student and has an 80% success rate.

Our Goal
Our vision is to help more young people in crisis through another Triple Care Farm you can help with this dream through your support. We are aware it is ambitious – requiring significant funding. Once we have a property established, we will need a steady income stream to fund the programs. Currently, Triple Care Farm costs $2 million per year to run so it will be an enormous challenge to finance a second facility.

We know it is a significant commitment as the dream is so great but there are so many desperate young Australians that need our help. We would appreciate anything you can do to help us help young people make permanent changes to their lives.

Since I started the music course I have gained a wider knowledge in music and feel more confident and creative within myself. The projects I’ve been working on in the course have helped me learn how things can be done differently and put more motivation into my own hobby.

Before CYI I was doing nothing really, I was in a depressed state and trying to work out how to make music properly at home on my own. It has given me the motivation to get up in the mornings and get out into the world again after so long. I’ve met a lot of friendly people and have also gained some social skills, I’ve been able to open up.

News: Success Geoff's Sweetest Threat

GEOFF Huegill wasted no time after completing his fairytale return to the Australian swim team at the Commonwealth Games trials before declaring his intentions to return from Delhi with a gold medal.

Huegill (23.46sec) will compete at his first major international meet in six years after taking out the 50m butterfly in style at Sydney Olympic Park on Thursday night, with a time just two hundredths of a second slower then his old world record set in 2001.

The win capped a remarkable journey for the Sydney Olympic medallist, who has lost 45kg after his weight ballooned to 138kg following the 2004 Athens Olympics.

The 31-year-old, now a muscular 93kg, rated the experience on par with competing at the Sydney Games in 2000.

"It's been a dream come true," Huegill said. Consistency in and out of the pool has been the key to Huegill's weight loss. Huegill lost 45kg over two years of training in the pool and cutting down on partying out of the pool.

A strict training regime and a disciplined approach to food and alcohol has allowed him to keep the weight off for over a year. Renowned as someone who loved to party, Huegill said he is now totally in control of his drinking during an interview with the ABC's Madonna King earlier this morning.

``I do occasionally have one beer when I am at dinner, but in terms of going out and living that party lifestyle, that is well and truly out of my system,'' he said.

A family history of heart disease and a desire to become healthier for his family's sake started Huegill down the track to returning to the pool in competitive swimming.

`'My father passed away from a heart attack in his mid 50s and I realised I wanted to have a family and be there for my family,'' he said. ``I had to start looking after my health.''

"To come back from the position I was in, it's something I definitely don't take for granted. It's been well and truly worth all the pain.

"... The emotions I feel today are well and truly on par with the way I felt 10 years ago when I stood behind the blocks at the Sydney Olympics."

Huegill rated himself at only 85-90 per cent fitness, and sent a clear warning to former South African world record holder Roland Schoeman about his intentions in India.

"23.44 is a pretty good world standard time at the moment, so my sights will definitely be coming away with a medal if not gold," he said.

"I'm happy to put that out there now. I love racing Roland and he's definitely going to be the man to beat, so it's going to be good to see how he goes now without his supersuit."

Before CYI I was making my own stuff at home and did not mingle very much, but now at CYI I am around other young people and hoping to improve my socialising even more. I hope someone likes my art at the exhibition and purchases it, it would really boost my morale and make feel like a real artist.
Blog: TCF Student Blog Update - April 2010

Students who are within the programs we support have written short pieces about their progress and how they are feeling. In some instances identifying information will be removed.

Hi again I now only have 3 weeks left of the program to go it has just flown by and the last thing I thought is that I’d still be here. I remember the first day I came here I was so determined to get out of here I thought it was worst day of my life. I’m so glad that I stayed because I know that if I had left on that second day I was here I would be no where near where I really need to be in my life and finding who I really am. I feel like a part of the furniture here now and it is going to be really hard to leave here because I have connected with so many unique, kind, caring, loving, giving, generous, understanding, self-sacrificing, genuine people, I could keep going and going on how great they are…

I am so thankful and grateful for having a counsellor here she is the best counsellor I have ever had without her constant support and non stop listening and I smile that always lights up my day. I feel so supported like the empty space inside of me has been filled from everything that she has done I cant thank her enough she is such a special person to me. I have never openly spoken about or written about having Autistic Spectrum Disorder in my life but I feel confident enough to share it with you now, because she has really helped me deal with it better and find the lighter side to it and to know that I am not on my own with it. If I could put her in my suitcase and take her with me when I leave I would but I’ll let her stay here to keep impacting on other young peoples lives in the awesome way she does the young people after me will be truly blessed to have her in their lives.

My plan I'm considering after this is to go to another rehab much like this one to prepare myself and to become more strong and confident for when I am out in everyday life. Coming from the girl who was so scared of everything and unhappy all the time, not being able to do anything or cope without a bottle of alcohol in my hand, never expressing myself, never doing chores, never getting up early or going to bed early…that has all been turned around now, I still have a lot to work on but already there has been huge changes. I have been alcohol and drug free for 9 weeks now I still can’t believe that I have been able to do that Triple Care Farm has made me realise that you can do anything if you put your mind to it.

I hope to one day work at a place like Triple Care Farm and help young people as much as I can, I hope to write a book one day of my life story and the part that all the staff and the young people have played on my life. I know my life will never be the same again it has been radically changed and I hope in the next 3 weeks I can get and do as much as can out of the program as well as encouraging my friends who still have some time to go to keep going because they wont regret it and they deserve to live their lives to the fullest. I’m excited about where my life is taking me now!

Yours sincerely,
A Changed Girl

Students who are within the programs we support have written short pieces about their progress and how they are feeling. In some instances identifying information will be removed.

The End of My Journey at Triple Care Farm

Hi again for the last time, it feels pretty surreal already finishing the 3 months of the program it has just flown by. When I think back to the day that I first came here and the way I looked and acted it is so different to the way I am now I feel more confident and independent but I still have a lot to work on, being out in the big wide world without alcohol and drugs is going to be a huge challenge. Im not sure how ready I am for that just yet to be honest I am scared of leaving alcohol behind for good it’s like leaving a big bad best friend behind, but I think I can eventually live without it and make a real best friend not some liquid in a bottle.

When I think about it now it seems funny of much a sweet poison as like to call it took over my life I wasn’t able to function without it and it still seems hard now to, but it is getting easier. Im learning to accept that I can have fun and laugh without having to drink, it does feel weird to me though because I have been stuck for awhile in an unrealistic world that im now breaking out of.

I’m still having my ups and downs everyday and some days it feels so hard I just want to quit, but when I sit outside around my friends with the view in the background watching them laughing and talking and achieving the goals they set for themselves and just trying so hard to be the best they can be.

It helps me to keep going and not see that everyday is a big drag, it is still pretty hard for me to realize that and not take things for granted and to be satisfied that I can just be happy and that it’s not a bad thing that it is actually really good so that I don’t bring the others down either because I only want the best for them. When I leave next Tuesday to go to another long term rehab which I changed my mind so many times about to try and get out of it so I didn’t have to face it, because I know I am going to be scared and I know I will want to just run away and not face things but I am going to push through it as best as I can.

Sometimes I think I just want to go back to what I was doing but in my heart I really don’t want to because I never want to hurt my family or any of the relationships I have with the people in my life anymore, and I don’t want to hurt myself anymore either I want to be a better person. I want to show other young people how to live an alcohol and drug free life I just want to be a good example not a bad one anymore, I want to bring back the good person who has been hidden in the shadows for a long time.

I spoke to my Mum on the phone yesterday because I was having a bit of a hard time but when I heard my Mums voice my spirit just lifted she is such an amazing person and im so blessed to have her as my Mum she has been through and overcome so much in her life a lot of it from me but she has loved me just the same through everything and I admire her so much, I hope one day to give back to her everything I have taken every small step that I take to making a fulfilling life.

I’m not only doing it for myself. But for my Mum too and my family because I love them all so much no matter how much I don’t want to believe it or accept it I have to admit that in my heart I really do. I know one day we will all sit around together as one big happy family again and I can’t wait to be apart of that.

This is probably the most positive I have written in a long time and I couldn’t have done it without the time I have spent here at Triple Care Farm, every single staff member has made a huge impact in my life no matter what they do. I can’t begin to thank them enough for how much of themselves they have given to me straight from their selfless and gracious hearts. I will never forget any of them each and every one of the staff will have a place in my heart that I will cherish everyday, when im having a hard time I will remember the things that I have been told and taught and picture all the faces then I know I can get through it. The dark world that I was in is now full of bright light, thank you all so so much you are all a huge blessing. When I eventually write a book you will all be in it!

Love you all.

Students who are within the programs we support have written short pieces about their progress and how they are feeling. In some instances identifying information will be removed.

At the age of 14 I became a heavy pot smoker, I thought I could never live without it. I became a Speed, Ice and Cocaine addict at the age of 17, which I was using everyday. I was peer pressured in to it and after I got the taste I didn’t want to turn back.

My life revolved around a spoon, a fit, water and a cotton tip. It mad me feel good about everything and forget about my troubled past. My addiction was out of control. I haven’t completed my schooling since Year 9 because of my addictions; I have no qualifications and am now with probation and parole for doing stupid things under the influence of drugs.

I came across Triple Care Farm through my boyfriend who had completed the program a couple of years ago. Triple Care Farm has everything to offer me that I could possible need. So far it has been hard being so far from home and my loved ones. I am happy with the progress I have made at Triple Care Farm. I have only been here for 5 weeks. It wasn’t easy making it this far but im working on completing the 12 week program.

I will admit I didn’t think I was ready to give my habit up but being here has made me realize all the negative things about what I was doing to myself and those people supporting me.

I lost everybody that cared about me, including my friends and family. I have a loving partner who I am committed to but I need to build my relationship with him and my family again.

My goals in life have changed so much while doing the program, I don’t want to be known as a drug addict anymore, that life is in my past now. I am working on getting a qualification while I’m at Triple Care Farm so I am able to get a job. I have learned a lot of new skills and worked on skills that I wasn’t good with.

I have been drug free for 5 weeks now. I plan on finishing this program and staying drug free for life. Thanks to all the staff at Triple Care Farm and the new friends I have made whilst being here, without them I wouldn’t be the person I am today.

I am going into my 5th week on the farm now, I recently had my birthday, and it was the best birthday I have ever had. Even though I wasn’t able to celebrate it with my family back at home I still had my new family here at Triple Care Farm. Everyone here went out of their way to make it such a special day for me and I appreciate it so much.

I am really starting to settle in now I don’t feel like an outsider or alone anymore, I feel more and more encouraged everyday knowing that I have so much great support from the staff and the friends I have become closer to everyday. The time I have spent here has been so precious, I have never been so happy and you can’t take the smile off my face, it used to be a rare thing.

This has been the best decision and change I have ever made and I cant thank my mum enough for giving her all to help me, I believe God shone his light down on Triple Care Farm for me and the other’s who are sharing this journey with me. I know that all my friend’s lives will be transformed when they finish at the farm I’ll be so happy to see them achieving their goals and living the lives they were meant to live. Im starting to set goals which is something I have never really done, one of my goals I have recently set for the future is to be a counsellor to young people who are going through depression and suicide so I can help from my own experiences.

Triple Care Farm has really shown me how much others have gone through not just myself; I’m learning that it’s not all about me inside my little box. To jump out of it and to live life for what it really is just being my self it has really opened up my eyes. I have been alcohol and drug free for six weeks now and im not looking back, im going to stick it out for the 12 weeks and give my friends a hand to hold to finish it with me and I hope at the end we will all be together as different people who are going somewhere with so much to give and show who we really are. My friends here have taken off from the starting line and some are now in the middle of the race, so let’s keep running together and finish it!

Bless you all.

Students who are within the programs we support have written short pieces about their progress and how they are feeling. In some instances identifying information will be removed.

I am at the starting line of my journey at the farm, I have only been at the farm now for two weeks and I’ll be having my 21st birthday very soon.

I am a long way from home; it was so hard watching my mum driving away knowing that I couldn’t be there with her it was a very emotional time for us both. But I believe that I am here for a reason my mum searched around for so many places but nothing stood out that much, until she came across triple care farm. When she told me what the farm had to offer it was everything that I was interested in, I had never been to Sydney before so it was a whole new place to get to know and an adventure.

The staff here have been amazing, even though on the second day I gave some of them a hard time, they still kept encouraging me and always smiling no matter what was going on. I have never met such generous and self sacrificing people who give so much of their time to help young people in need.

Its been a humbling experience realising how much I have taken peoples help for granted or not accepted it, all the beautiful young people here with me are all inspirational to me in many different ways I have made some good friends already and I appreciate the experience so much.

The counselling has been fantastic I has been a huge help for me in keeping me strong and motivated to stick it out for the 3 months. I have been drug and alcohol free for 4 weeks now and I have never felt better. I am looking forward to achieving my goals and starting a brand new life with the help of triple care farm.

Blog: CEO Diary January

Whilst enjoying the holiday we are given to celebrate Australia Day I reflected on how grateful I am to have the good fortune to be born in this country. I reflected on how wonderful our Sir David Martin Foundation loyal donors are and how they epitomise the Australian spirit of helping others in need and being True Blue! by giving generously when asked to support the children and young adults less fortunate in our community. By giving them a second chance to become healthy and happily adjusted and contributing to society, they are allowing them, after receiving care and support through the programs we fund, to also become fine Australians on their journey of discovery.

Just yesterday we received a wonderful bequest from one of our faithful band of supporters who recently passed away. After thoughtfully looking after her family and friends, the residual of her estate was left between three charities. Thankfully Sir David Martin Foundation was one. Our gracious donor will never know how many lives her thoughtful generosity will help. Maybe even save.

So on this Australia Day I give thanks for all your support and the generosity of our dear departed friend of the Foundation and hope that in all our heart of hearts we all give consideration to become a bequestor of the Sir David Foundation, touching the lives of children we will never know.

News: Commonwealth Bank Staff Community Fund

Sir David Martin Foundation is very grateful to be the recipient this year of one of the community grants from the Commonwealth Bank Staff Community Fund. This fund is Australia’s longest running employee contribution program.

Sir David Martin Foundation is very grateful to be the recipient this year of one of the community grants from the Commonwealth Bank Staff Community Fund. This fund is Australia’s longest running employee contribution program. A cheque for $9,859 was presented to Jannine Jackson, to fund the ongoing ‘after care’ for our Students. This support from the staff at the Commonwealth Bank was very welcome and a much needed boost to the work of the Foundation.

At the end of their stay at the Farm, students “graduate” and are placed in a supportive environment within the community. Students receive 6 months after care support, receiving weekly phone calls and visits. The Aftercare Program provides accommodation, training and/or further education options. It provides family support, court support, referral to other services, assisting in transport to appointments, crisis advice and mediation.

It is vital that the support networks gained at the Farm are carried through for the following six months after leaving the farm. This year this ongoing support has been made possible with the grant from the Commonwealth Bank.

The need for an aftercare worker is critical to our graduates’ ongoing recovery. Below are just some of the positive outcomes pertinent to the after care program.

Improve in family functioning and interpersonal skills
Reduction in psychological distress
Increased rates of employment
Increase in stable housing
Increase in self-esteem, self-discipline and impulse control
Overall changes to their behaviour, self-discipline and impulse control

News: ANDREW LOCK ADVENTURER OF THE YEAR

Less than two weeks ago Andrew Lock was sitting on an ice ledge at 7600m, fearing he may freeze to death but tomorrow he will swap his sub-zero snow suit for a business suit when he is presented with the Australian Geographic Society Adventurer of the Year Award for 2009.

Already one of the world’s most accomplished climbers, Lock made history on Friday 2 October when he and Welsh climbing partner, Neil Ward, stood atop Mt Shishapangma - one of 14 “8000ers”, those mountains in the oxygen-starved heights above 8000m. In that instant, Lock not only became the first Australian to reach “Shisha’s” summit but just the 18th person in the world to climb all 14 and the first Australian to do so.

It was a quest that took Lock 16 years to complete and one that didn’t come easily. Mt Shishapangma had beaten him twice before but this time Lock took a different although longer route. After a month-long expedition and a four-day climb to their final camp, Lock and Ward started the push to the summit at 5am. Twelve hours later they could only afford to spend a few minutes on the summit as the weather worsened. As they descended, a storm hit and, rather than continue down-climbing in treacherous conditions, they decided it was safer to spend the night on the mountain at 7600m.

Two days later, having reached the relative safety of Advance Base Camp, exhausted and badly dehydrated, Lock described the ..”worst night of my life.”

Blog: Ambassador's Diary October

Now in Kathmandu sorting, cleaning and repairing equipment before finding a flight back to Australia and the 'real world' (?).

Now in Kathmandu sorting, cleaning and repairing equipment before finding a flight back to Australia and the 'real world' (?).

Neil and I are still pretty tired and the stairs at the hotel are a challenge in themselves but its good to be eating real food and getting the odd hot shower.

Thankyou to all who've sent Neil and I congratulatory messages. I didn't realise there were so many following our progress and my apologies for not responding directly to everyone, yet. It means a lot though, so thanks.

I've received a few requests for specifics about the route we climbed -whether it was the '80s Austrian route or the '00s Inaki route. I think it might have been a combination of both. I think the Austrians traversed the north face above a large serac band whilst Inaki went below. We also went below. From there I'm not too sure which line the various parties took. We went to the left of the 3 fingers of rock that rise from around 7700 metres to 7800 metres, and from there went straight up to the summit ridge. Then along/up the ridge to the top. Those who care can fight over the 'name' of the route. We just enjoyed the climb.

Climbing Shisha was more than just reaching the top of an 8000er for me. It was the final peak in my quest to climb all fourteen of the 8000ers and it was also the first Austalian ascent of that mountain's true summit. So it was a lot of reward for a tough climb and the experience is all the richer for having worked hard for it. I think the bivy on the way down was Shisha's way of letting us know that we'd been 'allowed' the summit but shouldn't get too cocky about it.

Of course, whilst it was Neil and I doing the physical work on this climb, there was a lot of support in the background. Many thanks to Robin Boustead, Judy Smith and Jamie McGuiness for very valuable weather information, and the following organisations for high quality equipment and sponsorship, without which the climb would have been much more difficult and dangerous:
Mountain Hardwear
Gore-tex
Outdoor Life Group - Sydney
Trek and Travel - Sydney
Fisherman's Friend
Spelean (Sydney) & Petzl
Australian Geographic
Millet
World Expeditions

Sooooo, have I finished with 8000 metre climbing? No. I have at least one more climb I'd like to do next year in the pre-monsoon season. Details to be announced later. So stay tuned and thankyou all again for your support and good wishes.

News: Ambassador Climbing

Andrew Lock will leave for the Himalayas early September in his second bid this year to be the first Australian to climb all of the world's "death zone'' peaks - those in the oxygen-starved heights above 8000m.

Andrew Lock, Ambassador will leave for the Himalayas early September in his second bid this year to be the first Australian to climb all of the world's "death zone'' peaks - those in the oxygen-starved heights above 8000m.

He is, arguably Australia's most accomplished high altitude mountaineer, will join an international list of elite climbers when he reaches the 14th and final 8000m-plus summit, Tibet's Mt Shishapangma. It will be Lock’s third attempt at the summit.

Forty-seven year old Lock, who lives in Canberra and works fulltime to pay for his expeditions, is one of the world’s foremost mountaineers. Aside from Mt Everest, he has completed all of the world's most famous climbs, including K2 - the second highest peak - and the deadly Annapurna, a mountain that claims the lives of one in two climbers who attempt it.

In March this year he travelled to the Himalayas determined to finish his 15 year campaign by standing atop Shishapangma but was unable to get the necessary permit to enter Tibet.

“I had already spent two weeks trekking and acclimatising in the Khumbu (Everest) region in Nepal and another two weeks preparing equipment and buying food for the expedition. It was disappointing to have to come home without even seeing the mountain but that is the nature of mountain climbing. There are so many variables – including administrative hiccups – that can send you home,” explained Lock.

His awakening to serious mountaineering came with a roadshow by well-known former mountaineer Tim McCartney-Snape in the back room of a pub in Wagga Wagga, NSW, where Lock was living and working as a country cop in 1985.

"I was already active in the outdoors but was looking for something more. As soon as I saw Tim's presentation I was inspired and knew I'd found my path. I moved back to Sydney, learned to rock climb, then went to New Zealand where I learned to climb alpine mountains. Since then I've been in the high mountains of the world every year of my life.

“It’s taken me into a different stratosphere of physical and mental effort. But it’s taken its toll. It’s not just the financial cost. I’ve made personal and professional sacrifices as well and so many of my friends were killed along the way, some in my arms.

“But now I’m on the cusp of completing the toughest mountaineering project there is and being the first Australian to achieve it. Climbing the '8000ers' has forced me to push well beyond any psychological or physical barriers,” said Lock.

Lock will leave Sydney on 6 September bound for Kathmandu and Nepal from where he will cross into Tibet and commence the trek to Shishapangma. He plans to summit Mt Shishapangma by mid October. If he succeeds this time, Lock will celebrate his achievement by returning to Nepal in March 2010 and attempting to summit Mt Everest - which he has conquered twice previously - but this time solo, without the aid of oxygen and via the dangerous north ridge. If successful, it could be the last expedition for the seasoned climber who doesn’t believe his luck will hold out.

“It may be time to hang up my ice axes after Everest,” said Lock. “I’ve survived where so many good climbers have died. I’ve been incredibly lucky but I can’t keep rolling the high altitude dice and survive.”

News: Australia vs. New Zealand

Luna Park hosted a Australia vs. New Zealand Dinner which Sir David Martin Foundation were the recipients.

Just a few days before the thrilling first match of the Bledisloe Cup, Sir David Martin Foundation was the recipient of its own Australia vs. New Zealand event, held at Luna Park with magnificent views of the Harbour Bridge.

Billed as the Rugby Union wine dinner almost 200 people were treated to great food, fabulous wine and hilarous debate over who does it better - Australia or New Zealand. Then with a glass of red wine in hand, two former rivals - Jason Little (veteran Australian Wallaby Player) and David Kirk MBE (former All Blacks Captain) had a verbal stash. Wow! Did that give everyone a glimpse into what is said on the playing field!

The menu was created about executive chef Mark Taylor combining the best from both sides of the pond. Tasmanian Salmon for entree, New Zealand Lamb for main and finishing with Pavlova and an exquisite cheese platter. Each course was complimented with a amazing wines from both wineries. It was a fabulous night and the Foundation is very grateful to our many sponsors and Gary Daly and the team at Luna Park. It was a wonderful way to raise much needed funds for youth in crisis.

I have found through life that sometimes we are inspired in strange ways. I was at a friends funeral last week and reminded of an analogy that he had given to me when I felt overwhelmed at the time. It was delivered in the eulogy and I was reminded of him and why I do what I do in a such a poignant way.

"A man was walking along a deserted beach at sunset. As he walked he could see a young boy in the distance, as he drew nearer he noticed that the boy kept bending down, picking something up and throwing it into the water. Time and again he kept hurling things into the ocean.

As the man approached even closer, he was able to see that the boy was picking up starfish that had been washed up on the beach and, one at a time he was throwing them back into the water.

The man asked the boy what he was doing, the boy replied,"I am throwing these washed up starfish back into the ocean, or else they will die through lack of oxygen. "But", said the man, "You can't possibly save them all, there are thousands on this beach, and this must be happening on hundreds of beaches along the coast. You can't possibly make a difference." The boy smiled, bent down and picked up another starfish, and as he threw it back into the sea, he replied.

"I made a huge difference to that one!"

This analogy reminded me of the overwhelming need that we face from young people needing help. Understanding that we can't assist everyone but we making a huge difference to the ones that we can help.

News: Test training at Leichhardt Oval

A recent August morning at Wallaby training a proud Manly Dad finally got to experience the auction item he purchased in March at the Sir David Martin Foundation Ball.

A recent August morning at Wallaby training a proud Manly Dad finally got to experience the auction item he purchased in March at the Sir David Martin Foundation Ball.

The prize was a slab of beer and a packet of Twisties, 2 tickets to the Bledisloe cup in Sydney on Saturday night and attend Test Training. This was for two days....

This also included a unique opportunity to meet with Robbie Deans and Jim Williams, and give then a little bit of your advice for Saturday big game!!

The beer was warm and held tightly under Dads arm, the Twisties were great, but the opportunity for young Harry Langrell to meet Robbie Deans & Jim Williams and chat to the players was a once in a life time opportunity. The young Manly lad goes to St Augustine’s and plays in their 2nd XV.

Not sure what advice he gave Robbie, we will have to wait until the big game and find out if it was useful.

Jim Williams is an Ambassador for Sir David Martin Foundation and he made sure that Harry and his Dad Peter sat in the ARU seats and had more than enough time to privately ask questions and offer some teenager advice.

Blog: CEO Diary July

I recently read a quote from George Eliot “What do we live for, if it is not to make life less difficult for each other?” and realised this is why I love my job so much. I know that each and every day I am making someone’s live a little less difficult.

I recently read a quote from George Eliot “What do we live for, if it is not to make life less difficult for each other?” and realised this is why I love my job so much. I know that each and every day I am making someone’s live a little less difficult. In the last two weeks I have had the pleasure of seeing in action the profound impact that the Foundation has on young lives. I wanted to share with you two very different stories and places in their journeys.

Simon needed hand surgery because of an old injury that was causing his bone to die. It was extremely painful and he had been living with that pain for a number of years but it was getting worse as the disease spread. He had led a life on the streets and seeing a doctor is difficult let alone complex surgery. The Farm has no budget for personal surgery however they believed it was an essential part of his recovery and approached me for help. The public health care system was too slow and he was on strong, addictive pain medication. With a small window to work with one of our generous donors organised to pay for this young mans surgery. I was humbled. Simon was so touched that someone cared enough to help. He has come out of what appears to be a successful major surgery and he is living a life full of hope and opportunity that he never thought possible. The dreams and aspirations he now has for his life are huge. This young man is eternally grateful that we have impacted his life in such a profound way. He has just this week exited the Farm and we are so proud of his accomplishments.

I recently just took a trip down to the farm and a young man who had been on drugs for a number of years has been clean now for 45 days. This is the longest period in his life he has been clean. He is beginning the journey and amazed how different he feels now that he is off the significant amount of illicit drugs. He read a piece of poetry to me and our guests which was very painful to hear. It was brilliantly written and poignant. He had shared an insight into the number of near death experiences and hopelessness that he felt. He journey has been hard but he really feels that the Farm is making a difference and ultimately saved his young life. I am confident he is in the best place that he can be and I am looking forward to seeing him at graduation.

I am glad my life is making a difference for others. Sometimes I am not always sure of the end result but I am truly honoured to be a part of something that doesn’t just make it less difficult but has such profound effects for remarkable young lives.

News: Handy Surgery for Student

Thanks to the generosity of Sir David Martin Foundation donors, a Triple Care Farm student has been able to receive hand surgery to eliminate chronic pain and improve his quality of life by breaking free from the cycle of pain and drugs.

The Foundation received a letter of thanks this week from one of our students. This young boy was enduring strong pain in his hand for some time and had been self medicating to gain relief from that pain. After living on the streets and now struggling with an addiction, he sought help from Triple Care Farm. His ability to break the cycle of pain and drugs was dependent on surgery from a specialist at a cost of $5,000. With the remarkable generosity of one of Sir David Martin Foundations supporters, he can finally move on with his life free of pain and drugs. Below is an excerpt from his letter.

“I am writing to say thanks for giving me the opportunity to get the operation on my hand done so that I am in less pain. I really appreciate all your help and support in making it possible…

… already I feel better within myself and now I am looking forward to my life ahead. Without this operation it would have made it difficult to cope and I can strongly say my life would have gone nowhere due to the aggravation and pain I was feeling which was affecting my whole attitude towards life but now I have a positive outlook on life which makes getting up every morning a whole lot easier.”

Young lives are constantly changing some quite profoundly but always for the better. For this young boy it was the belief and support from Sir David Martin Foundation and Triple Care Farm that turned this positive change into a reality.

Blog: CEO Diary May

With the Global Economic Crisis taking effect, we understand that times are tough for many people and we thank you for continuing to support us. Here at the Foundation we are focusing on meeting the needs of those in desperate need of our services.

As we struggle to understand the full impact of the Global Economic Crisis on our organisation, I find myself having numerous conversations with supporters and suppliers that they too are in a similar situation. They have had a significant down-turn in business. They are concerned for the future of their jobs and their organisations. It was during these conversations that I heard “GEC” for the first time. I had to stop and think what were we talking about? It is then I realised that the ‘Global Economic Crisis’ has been so broadly discussed that it is now an acronym. What is Sir David Martin Foundation doing to try and address the “GEC”? We are planning and trying to ensure that we can still meet the needs of the people who really need us.

The number of people who desperately need our services is increasing dramatically. My staff and I have seen a dramatic increase in the number of distressed parents who are contacting us and willing to try anything to get help for their troubled teen. This trend has us all concerned. Our programs are full and so it appears are the majority of others. Our goal is to help more but first we must prepare for our own economic slow down.

News: Cole Classic Swim – The Bumblebees Fundraising

On Sunday 1st February, five young boys from Sydney Grammar School swam in the The Sydney Morning Herald Cole Classic Swim at Manly to raise funds for Sir David Martin Foundation.

Sir David Martin Foundation would like to thank and congratulate The Bumblebees for their fantastic fundraising efforts in The Sydney Morning Herald Cole Classic Swim at Manly.

On Sunday 1st February five young boys from Sydney Grammar warmed up as they got ready for their 1km ocean swim. It was a beautiful sunny day at Manly and swell was big so the course changed and competitors swam from Shelly beach to Manly beach. With over 4,000 competitors and the big waves it was a tough race.

With their spirits high, The Bumblebees, a team of 5, completed the 1km race in good times with Tom O’Neill finishing 2nd in the Open Division. What was even more amazing was that The bumblebees were the highest fundraising team for the event raising $2,396 from friends, family and bucket collecting at school. All funds raised going towards the Sir David Martin Foundation, helping youth in crisis.

Congratulations Sam Molly, Brian Lam, Tom O’Neill, Charles Arcus and Aiden Bryant on your amazing fundraising efforts and Swim results.

News: Property Industry Foundation attend Triple Care Farm

On April 24th, 52 corporate volunteers spent a day at Triple Care Farm working alongside staff and students to mend and maintain the Farm and enjoyed a BBQ lunch prepared by students. A big thank you to all the volunteers from Property Industry Foundation.

Fifty Two Corporate volunteers arrived at TCF by bus on Friday morning; they were greeted by sunshine and a spectacular view of the ocean. The comments are always the same. “Wow this is amazing, I never expected this”. A couple of early volunteers were included in the weekly staff and student meeting, which held an impromptu and emotional pre Anzac Day thankyou for those who protect us.

After a quick cup of tea, they broke into their work groups with their job tasks in hand. Mowing lawns and gardening under the clear blue autumn skies was a pleasant task, although very tiring, as there was a large number of girls doing the mowing. Another group finished of the work done a couple of weeks ago by the Dexus group, painting and attaching skirting boards to the log cabin that they had gyp rocked. Whilst the brave ones with tool belts and heavy machinery headed down to the hen house, to make a ‘chook run’ designed by the students.

The students worked alongside the corporate volunteers all day painting, chasing chickens, preparing salads for the BBQ lunch, cooking the BBQ for all the volunteers, mowing, weeding, and generally having a terrific time. One of the highlights of these working bees is working along side the students who often share their life stories; they love the opportunity to share and also hear about corporate life and just what opportunities might be out there for them.

During lunch everyone relaxed around the lawn area, students, staff of Triple Care Farm and volunteers all telling stories, and discussing the afternoons work; it seems the ‘chook run’ is running behind schedule!

By 4 pm the day was coming to a close, and all were tired but very content with their accomplishments. The chickens were being hand fed by one of our students and I was the recipient of 3 farm fresh eggs, which came from a group of battery chickens that were rescued by some of the students last week. Very special! I had them the next morning and they were wonderful!

Many hands do make light work.

Thankyou Property Industry Foundation!

Well I'm sorry to say that I've had to cancel my Shishapangma expedition this season. To date we've been unable to secure a climbing permit so I decided that we just didn't have enough time left to give that mountain a good attempt, let alone go to Everest afterwards. So we're heading home and will try again in the post monsoon. It’s a disappointing end to the season but we wouldn't call them 'expeditions' if they were easy. So, it’s back to training, fund raising and planning for next season.

News: Dexus Property Group visit Triple Care Farm

On April 1st, Dexus Property Group headed down to Triple Care Farm to battle the fog in a working bee. The volunteers from Dexus were thrilled to try something new while supporting the youth at the Farm. Thank you Dexus for all your hard work.

Twenty-two of Dexus staff rolled up in the dense fog to Triple Care Farm. The Illawarra Highway was closed and the rolling mist was very thick and low to ground the rain was continuous. They must have thought it was an April fool’s day joke!

The plan was to paint an exterior and plaster boarding the log cabin. Plans changed quickly and the Volunteers split into two groups, half to do the plaster boarding and the other half to ‘spring clean’ inside the accommodation areas. The majority of the Dexus volunteers were young women, after a brief lesson in plastering they were eagerly up the ladders and doing something they had never done before, plastering walls! There was lots of chatter and laughter from the girls as they worked up an appetite before lunch. This was a wonderful opportunity for the Dexus staff to try something new, whilst helping with the much needed work that is continuous on a large property.

The log cabin was literally logs nailed to each other leaving long gaps where the bitter winds of winter penetrate into the rooms. Now thanks to DEXUS everyone will be snug and cozy. This was a great opportunity for Dexus staff to get out of their office space, and mix with some kids who have really done it tough with one lad especially keen to help and share his life story as he worked along side the volunteers.

After a lunch of sausages, salads and scones jam and cream it was back to work and then later in the afternoon back to their offices in Sydney.

Thankyou Dexus, your work will make a difference to all the youth that stay at Triple Care Farm!

News: Jim Williams on Elite Footballers

Jim Williams discusses the position that elite footballers have in society as role models and the necessity of maintaining a positive image.

Assistant Wallabies Coach and Sir David Martin Foundation Ambassador, Jim Williams, believes all high-profile athletes need to be aware they are role models in society. Jim Williams and Wallabies Coach, Robbie Deans, have educated the Wallabies to ensure they are aware of the consequences of negative actions. This comes after the alcohol-inspired incident of another NRL team recently.

Jim Williams recognizes that attitudes to alcohol consumption need to be discussed.
“When footballers are in the public eye they have to behave, it is that simple,” he said. “Everyone likes to have a god time but these guys need to be aware their actions are always monitored. They have responsibilities to uphold and they should take pride in the way they live their lives.”

Williams welcomed the concept of introducing women and families at social functions. “If anyone has balance and stability in their life the chances of them misbehaving are reduced,” he said. “A solution from a collective unit is required or problems will continue.”

News: Binge Drinking

Binge drinking has reached alarming proportions among young Australians, with an average four people under 25 dying each week from alcohol related injuries! One of the most prevalent problems with young people today is alcohol and binge drinking. Read more

Binge drinking has reached alarming proportions among young Australians, with an average four people under 25 dying each week from alcohol related injuries! Over the course of a year, this translates to more than 200 young lives being wasted! Assaults directly attributable to alcohol hospitalise another 3600 young people every year. There is nothing new about binge drinking, but what is new is the disturbing increases in the numbers of young people drinking frequently to excess! The worsening situation has prompted a $20m campaign by the Federal Government over two years and a supporting drive by the NSW Government. Binge drinking hurts our kids; it hurts mums and dads, and other family members; and it hurts our communities (costing $15 billion a year!).

South West Youth Services

Sir David Martin Foundation funded South West Youth Services provides counselling and support in Sydney’s Campbelltown area and regrettably staff see these various ‘hurts’ on a daily basis. Adolescent Counsellor, Phary Sok, advises that one of the most prevalent problems with young people today is definitely alcohol and binge drinking: “Last year, our counselling services worked with 48 young people and 60% of them had an underlying drug and alcohol issue. You will see from Brad, in his personal account (on the following page), that he is by no means the only teen, oblivious to the fact he has an issue with drinking.” “When a young person is in need of counselling, they often don’t realise that as a coping mechanism, they’ve relied on the effects of alcohol to numb or forget their pain. At least for a little while, they mainly see it as a social thing, a ‘cool’ thing to do. Having said that, some are also very aware of what they’re doing and do it to avoid having to confront or deal with a situation. By the time they realise they need other ways to cope, they’ve added an extra issue to cope with: their alcohol addiction!” says Phary.

Early Intervention

Alcohol often becomes a coping mechanism when a young person is left to cope or the signs go unnoticed. As time goes on, consumption tends to increase. Phary says “this is why early intervention is so crucial. Early stage along with prevention strategies before the problem occurs. This is what will create a dent in what is a massive social health problem for our adolescents today." “Government and non-government agencies, the media, music, sporting/ acting role models can all play a part. We all have a responsibility to teach our kids binge drinking is extremely dangerous and affects many young people", says Phary.

Binge Drinking – The Facts
Here are some startling statistics:

On average, four Australians under 25 die each week of alcohol related injuries.

70 young Australians are hospitalised weekly due to alcohol caused assault.

One in two people, aged 15-17, will do something they regret after getting drunk. Apart from violence, other risks from binge drinking include:

Drowning

Pedestrian and road accidents (death or severe injury)

Alcohol poisoning

Consequences such as impact on families and social embarrassment; loss of valuable items ie: phone or wallet; unprotected sex (greater danger of transmitted infection/unwanted pregnancy).

Longer term consequences include brain damage, depression and suicidal thoughts, and chronic disease. Every time someone drinks excessively, they are at risk of causing harm to themselves or others. On average, 25% of hospitalisations of 15-24 year olds are because of alcohol.

Sunday 22 February 2009 will once again see the RAN Sailing Association (RANSA) at Rushcutters Bay, Sydney hosting its Annual Regatta to raise money for the Sir David Martin Foundation.

Sunday 22 February 2009 will once again see the RAN Sailing Association (RANSA) at Rushcutters Bay, Sydney hosting its Annual Regatta to raise money for the Sir David Martin Foundation which is a charity administered by Mission Australia. The Committee vessel will again be a Navy ship. All proceeds of the RANSA Regatta are donated to the Sir David Martin Foundation.

Members of yacht clubs are invited to compete on behalf of their club for the Admiral’s Trophy – the ultimate prize of the regatta.

The Admiral’s Trophy was first presented in 1987 and is won by the yacht club that performs best overall in the regatta’s seven divisions.

Vice Commodore Peter Edwards said, “The Deed of Gift for the Admiral’s Trophy in fact extends an invitation to clubs as far as Pittwater and Newcastle in the north and Cronulla in the south. We would be delighted to again welcome competitors from these clubs in the very competitive fleet that sails in the regatta.”

In 1987 the Admiral’s Trophy was won by Royal Prince Edward Yacht Club. This was in fact the start of a winning streak that saw the RPEYC hold on to the trophy remain unbroken until 1999. It was won that year by Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron.

RANSA regained the trophy in 2004 and has held it since then having withstood strong challenges from a number of clubs in recent years. In 2008 RANSA retained the trophy from the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia by the narrowest of margins.

Vice Commodore Edwards also commented on the 2008 challenge by Drummoyne Sailing Club.

“Last year saw Drummoyne Sailing Club’s Board of Directors generously agree to reimburse the race entry fee for up to six of their club’s yachts to enter the regatta. Not only did that provide some fantastic competition, but it provided a strong challenge for the Admiral’s Trophy. Drummoyne Sailing Club was one of eleven clubs that were represented in the various divisions.

“It’s also been great to see that Parramatta River Sailing Club and Balmain Sailing Club have also been regular competitors in the regatta.

In 2008 while many divisions had close racing it was Division 4 that provided the closest results of the regatta with Guy Irwin’s Clewless, representingSydney Amateur Sailing Club, taking first place by the smallest margin possible; a mere one second from Esquisse 2, a Hood 23 skippered by RANSA's Richard Staines, who in turn placed ahead of Brotherhood, another RANSA Hood 23, by just 44 seconds.

Many other boats in the this division finished less than ten seconds apart from one another and of the 13 starters in this division just 15 minutes separated the first and last boats. As you can imagine there was plenty of lively conversation about tactics, foul-ups and musings about what could have been back at the RANSA boatshed after the race.

In keeping with the tradition of the regatta having a navy ship as the Committee Vessel this year the vessel will be HMAS Advance which is being provided by the Australian National Maritime Museum in Sydney. Advance was the third of 20 Attack class patrol boats built for the Royal Australian Navy between 1967 and 1969. She served out of Darwin in patrol boat squadrons until 1980, having weathered Cyclone Tracey in 1974, assisted in hydrographic surveys of the northwest coast, and featured in the popular ABC-TV series Patrol Boat.

Indeed, a great many serving and retired Naval Reserve personnel will surely hold fond memories of Advance since, after being superseded by the larger Freemantle class patrol boat, she was a Naval Reserve training ship. Advance was decommissioned in 1988.

The RANSA regatta supports the Sir David Martin Foundation which was named after the extremely well regarded Rear Admiral and former Governor of New South Wales. It was established according to instructions given by Sir David in the final days of his life. At the time there was growing concern about the marginalisation of young people, the paucity of specialised youth services and the increasing problem of youth homelessness in our cities.

The Sir David Martin Foundation’s vision is to create an environment where young people can grow up in safety, with hope and opportunity. Its mission is to provide all the resources necessary to enable young people to achieve their full, thereby influencing our community to do all they can to eliminate issues facing young people in crisis. It aims to encourage young people by instilling in them a new sense of self belief so that they can face the community at large without the need for drugs, crime and homelessness.

Racing will commence on Sydney Harbour at 11am with multiple divisions including two non-spinnaker divisions catering for a range of craft from big boats to small keel boats. There will also be a gaffers division and a Flying Tiger 10m division since the regatta forms part of the FT10 Association’s NSW State Championships. The race has a handicap start and There should be plenty of exciting racing in this division alone.

Divisional and additional lucky-draw prizes will be drawn back at the clubhouse for competitors and crew. Other post race activities include jazz band entertainment, special regatta refreshments, and the prize giving. There’s a full day of activities a special opportunity for competitors and RANSA to help support youth in our community.

RANSA is keen to top last year’s entries of 71 yachts in its bid to raise more money for the Sir David Martin Foundation.

The Notice of Race, Entry Form and Sailing Instructions can be downloaded from RANSA’s website www.ransa.com.au or are available from the RANSA Office (telephone: 02 9363 9939).

News: Triple Care Farm Graduation

Triple Care Farm Graduation Ceremony is always regarded as a very special occasion and the December 2008 graduation was very special indeed with our Patron, Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir AC CVO Governor of NSW attending the graduation.

What an incredible day, it was for me and many others new comers the first experience of a Graduation ceremony at Triple Care Farm. I could not have imagined how moving and special it was to be. I boarded the coach in Sydney along with a group of our supporters, and new friends to the foundation. The trip was happy, air-conditioned and a great opportunity for us to meet with one another.

Arriving at Triple Care Farm is always a ‘breath of fresh air’, turning into the long, tree lined driveway with the smell of salt in the air. Passing the cattle, a run away goat and the newly painted Ben Quilty shed. Today was no different except for the paddock full of cars; nearly 500 families, guests, and donors had arrived to see these wonderfully courageous kids ‘graduate’.

Her excellence Marie Bashir was already at the Farm mingling with staff, students and guests. Her Excellency is the Patron of the Sir David Martin Foundation and with her background in Adolescent Mental Health is always an encouragement to the students and our staff.

Watching the students collect their certificate from Her Excellency was very special, a big thankyou to Shane Rochefort gentleman’s outfitters who supplied suits to those students who could attend fittings, and to Australian Opal Cutters who supplied pearl ear rings to the young ladies graduating.

The smell of BBQ’s whiffed through the air with the white tents gently blowing in a early sea breeze. The highlight of the day was a testimony by a parent about her daughters confession of drug addiction and the families grief and confusion in the days after. Her discovery of Triple Care Farm and the support and healing that followed her arrival at the farm brought tears of joy for this brave and wonderful young girl.

Farmer Tom gave a glowing speech about the very humble Warren Holt who will be leaving Triple Care Farm in early 2009. Warren has spent the last 30 years working at the farm and will be greatly missed. His love of the students and his wisdom and knowledge of the issues they face is quite unique. However, Warren will be moving on to a new position in the early part of the New Year with Mission Australia as a Youth Mental Health advocate.

After the ceremony had finished Her Excellency took a tour of the farm, whilst the guests enjoyed a BBQ lunch on the lawns overlooking the Pacific Ocean, talking to families and graduation students about their dreams and visions for an exciting future.

Blog: On the Counsellors Couch Christmas Edition

The counsellors couch will give me the opportunity and the privilege to share the stories of the young people I work with (anonymously of course) and through this medium I hope to encourage awareness (no matter how small), normalise experiences of others.

Christmas is wonderful time of year where families get together, spend time together; there's lots of joy and presents and laughter. People enjoy having some time off, getting away to regroup, and rejuvenate. However for many others the joy and laughter is not present in a lot of homes and that is the reality of what we face every year unfortunately.

The counsellors couch will give me the opportunity and the privilege to share the stories of the young people I work with (anonymously of course) and through this medium I hope to encourage awareness (no matter how small), normalise experiences of others, but most of all be able to have this space to generally share information, chat, and debate with one another.

My job involves working with complex, very marginalised, and disadvantaged young people, and the stories, experiences I will share with you may or may not resonate with you. However I also work with amazingly strong, smart, resilient, savvy young people who through adversity obtain goals they thought were only dreams.

My sole aim is to learn something every day and we all have the capacity to give the gift of knowledge to one another, whether it be through personal experience or other means.

So having said that I welcome feedback, stories, experiences, comments from what I post, or any topics you might want to discuss. Ask me anything. I certainly look forward to the many discussions we will have.

I will leave you with my all time favourite quote from Marianne Williamson (A Return to Love 1992)

'Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?

Actually, who are you not to be'?

Until then have a safe and wonderful Christmas and a very happy new year everybody.

Hope you stick to your new years resolutions this time!

Blog: CEO'S Diary November

CEO updates are for supporters who might be interested in what is going on in the office and for an insight in to current issues affecting the Foundation.

I want more funding to reduce petty crime, decrease the burden on the overstretched hospital system and create young people with dreams and futures.

It costs $25,000 per student to go through the holistic care at Triple Care Farm. This is for their entire 12 week stay and the follow up after care that they receive. Compare this to what it costs Juvenile Justice system to keep the same individual for only 12 weeks is $46,000. This is with no follow up costs involved. It is easily proven through numerous studies that have followed up young offenders who come out of incarceration. The tragedy is that over half of them have reoffended and are back in incarceration within twelve months. The other half I think have just gotten better at not getting caught. The system is not rehabilitating them!

We have a program that is half the cost with much better outcomes. What I don’t understand as a taxpayer is I want my taxes to be used to solve problems. Some our biggest problems now are crime prevention, decreasing the overcrowding in hospitals, taking young people off unemployment benefits, building communities and families. We know how to fix them but it comes down to the might of the dollar and we need more funding!

News: 'Painting for a Brighter Future'

'Painting for a Brighter Future' was a wonderful and enjoyable evening. Leading Australian artists, Ken Done, Greg Wilson, Robin Ross and Mikinti Napanangka presented more than $100,000 worth of artworks to this cocktail fundraising event. View photos here

Leading Australian artists, Ken Done, Greg Wilson, Robin Ross and Mikinti Napanangka presented more than $100,000 worth of artworks to this cocktail fundraising event last Wednesday the 22nd October. Auctioneer Jenny Ankin also donated her time for the evening, to help raise much needed for funds for Triple Care Farm.

With the global financial crisis looming over Australia, the once generous corporate dollars are becoming scarcer, and the most vulnerable in society like the kids we help will suffer even more. There will be more homeless, more depressed and more turning to drugs and alcohol.

100 exclusive fundraising invitations were sent our to view a private corporate art collection, sip champagne and mingle with art lovers.

Due to the financial concerns people have at the moment, only one piece of this amazing work sold on the night, the Ken Done!

Approximately $25,000 was raised on the evening with donations and raffle

One of Australia leading Banks Executive Directors spoke at the evening and then we heard from Cat, a student in our CYI programme.

She spoke about her battle with MS at just 24 years of age, and finding the ART programme at CYI that has helped her to stay positive. She told a spellbound audience how she and her mother more than once discussed how she might end her life. She was scared and had nothing to live for. She was a top student at University with an amazing future ahead of her, she had everything any ‘normal’ 20 year old could want. Then she was struck down with this debilitating and painful disease. She still has a major battle ahead of her, but now she has support and can’t wait until morning when she can go and study art with like minded friends. What an inspiration she was to all who were in the room, what a privilege it was to hear her speak.

Thank you to all those who attended and to everyone who generously supported the evening, we could not have done it with out you!

News: What is Comorbidity?

Triple Care Farm has secured funding from Mental Health Coordinating Council to conduct a research project with Wollongong University

What is Comorbidity?

If you have not heard of comorbidity before you are not alone. Comorbidity simply means the co-occurrence of one or more diseases or disorders in an individual.

According to the Australian Government, Department of Ageing and Health, Resource Kit fir GP Trainers on Illicit Drug Issues, comorbid disorders are common, especially in specialist mental health and addiction services. Persons who have comorbid substance use and mental health disorders have poorer outcomes than those who have a single disorder. For example, the treatments of alcohol dependence and depression both tend to be less effective when conducted in the presence of the other disorder than when comorbidity is not present.

So how do you treat it?
Because Triple Care Farm is dealing with this complex issue every day, they were successful in securing funding from the Mental Health Coordinating Council to conduct a research project with Wollongong University. The research will focus on the outcomes for young people participating in the program who have a comorbid mental illness and drug/alcohol issues. This research will be used to help educate the wider public and service providers into better treatments and management for young people with such complex issues.

Thank you to all our generous supporters who contributed to the clinic at Triple Care Farm and Dr Stelter who continues to volunteer his time for the students.

Seing your doctor when you are not feeling well is something that we all take for granted. At Triple Care Farm that is not the case. Thanks to so many of you who financially supported this clinic, it is now an essential part of the Farm.

The medical services continue to grow and develop! Approximately 8 students visit the GP clinic each Thursday where Dr. Stelter continues to volunteer his time. The use of his facility donated by Sir David Martin Foundation has seen medications adjusted for students on a weekly basis. Also, Dr Stelter has been able to make referrals to other specialists; x-ray clinics and scans which ultimately result in faster and more appropriate outcomes for the students.

A recent addition to the clinic has been the installation of a Medical Vaccine Refrigerator. Dr Stelter plans to keep vaccines such as those used for cervical cancer.

Blog: On the Counsellor's Couch

Phary provides counselling services and support to young people at South West Youth Services (located in the Campbelltown area of NSW), on issues such as family breakdown, substance abuse and anger management. Read about some of her experiences.

According to Phary, our counsellor at South West Youth Services, all 45 cases she had last year had disclosed some form of sexual abuse. She is outraged at the number of young people suffering in silence and wants the community to support them and be aware that it exists.

Phary tells “Many of the young people we see have been abused by their peers, but because of the lack of understanding of what constitutes ‘appropriate sexual behaviour’ they continue to suffer in silence. “We have also underestimated the existence of inter-generational sexual abuse within families. It’s quite common for the young people we help to have parents or grandparents who were abused themselves. “A major challenge for youth counsellors is the reporting of sexual abuse to the authorities. While it is necessary to make sure cases of sexual abuse are raised appropriately, it can also cause a loss of trust between the client and counsellor – particularly when a young person has confided in you in absolute secrecy – it can result in fear and ultimately denial.”

Phary illustrates her point by sharing (a current client) Judy’s story. Judy was only 15 when she was raped at a party she attended, at the time she was confused and frightened and did not report it. She finally did which was the bravest thing she had ever done in her whole life. For rape victims there is a real barrier in telling authorities. They are often afraid and feel like they were the ones to be interrogated not the offenders. They are questioned on what they were wearing, whether they had been drinking, et cetera.

Judy reported her assault and it was investigated. The hardest thing for Judy as she did not receive the support she had hoped to receive from her family. When she confided in her mother she was told to “get over it, at least you were raped by a stranger rather than someone you know” - a statement she did not know how to deal with. You see, her mother was sexually abused for some years by a family member and so was her grandmother. Both have lived with the abuse and never have notified authorities regarding it. They have never received counselling for it, and in a sense moved on from it as something that should never be spoken about. Generational sexual abuse is seldom discussed.

Judy began to deal with her torment, and her trauma the best way she knew how. She partied, explored drug use, drank alcohol and became sexually promiscuous. Her reason she described in her own words was she only took this direction because she was looking for love and acceptance from whom ever she could get it from. Naturally Phary's concern was high for her state of mind.

There were many mediation meetings with her mother and father. Through these meetings Judy was able to voice everything she feared to say to her parents and her parents were able to see the damage that was being done to their daughter by being so complacent about her assault. Her mother was also able to deal with her own emotional grief with her own abuse. Judy is always positive despite everything she has endured. She has the most fantastic attitude to life. She still has troubles that plague her, but still remains wise and thoughtful in her perspectives on life.

Phary's face lights up as she says "Speaking about Judy’s story always inspires me whenever I hit barriers. And I hit them often. It is not because people don’t care about rape, sexual assaults, generational sexual abuse, or even molestation. It is because people don’t want to believe that it is happening, or happening to them or even to someone they know. Some people may even feel helpless; friends or family who know it has happened but didn’t know what to do is common. Awareness of the topic is the most empowering, and it takes very little work. The responsibility is on all of us."

News: Sir David Martin Foundation to Benefit from Sharity

Sir David Martin Foundation is set to benefit from a non-profit program designed to turn small parcels of shares into charitable donations.

Sir David Martin Foundation is set to benefit from a non-profit program designed to turn small parcels of shares into charitable donations.

Sir David Martin Foundation has just joined three other Australian charities to become a recipient of the program, called Sharity or 'shares to charity'.

Through Sharity, Australian shareholders with a small number of shares and a desire to support the community can gift their shares directly to a charity of their choice, without having to pay brokerage fees or commissions. Sharity also works with Australian companies to facilitate corporate donation programs, with all gifts over $2 being fully tax deductible.

Formed in 2002 by Australian company Worthington Clark Pty Ltd, Sharity was instrumental in lobbying the Federal Government to facilitate changes to the tax laws in 2007. As a result, individuals can now claim a tax deduction for a gifted donation of shares of any value (minimum $2) in a publicly listed company.

For more information visit the Sharity page, click here

Female Triple Care Farm Student 11.08.08

I have had a very busy week. This has been the first time since Monday that I have had the time to write about my time at the farm. Last Wednesday I went to the cattle sales with Farmer Tom and it was a fantastic experience. I learnt about were all our beef comes from and how it comes into the farmers possession and into our butcheries. Farmer Tom also took me and 3 other students on a trip around the southern highlands which I had never seen before. I now have knowledge on a few of the sites around triple care farm, it was enlightening and fantastic. I have also started on the third stage of my wooden trinket box I am making. I am sifting gravel which is tiresome and no easy feat. But I know I will be proud of the out come and this box will contain memories from my learning experience at TCF.

Last Saturday my mother, Grandmother, brother and my new baby sister came to see me at the farm. We went for lunch in Kiama, which was great. It was a lovely day, showing and telling family of how I succeeding and becoming a better person. I was especially proud to tell my mum I am in my fifth week now. She is proud of me and that makes me even happier with myself. My baby sister is gorgeous and too young yet to know who I am but I will have my memory of Saturday forever which is great.

On Sunday the farm went bike riding in the bush, it was something I have never done before and I didn’t think I would like or that I would have the physical endurance to be able to keep up, I did and I enjoyed my self immensely. I fell of my bike a few times though and have a sore body today. With some funny lovely memories to keep.

Yesterday afternoon was tough though as a few of the students bad behaviour affected me and the whole group doing what we actually wanted to do. I have learned again that there are people in the world that are going to annoy you and do bad things and that a fact is that there is nothing that you or anyone else can do to change a persons behaviour or thoughts. That you just have to get on life and deal with blows it gives you.

All in all I had a lovely week with more learning experiences good and bad, it never ceases to amaze me that you just don’t stop learning either from your own mistakes or witnessing the one’s others around you make.

Blog: Student Blog episode 1

Students who are within the programs we support have written short pieces about their progress and how they are feeling. In some instances identifying informaiton will be removed. The students have not used their real names.

28.7.2008 Female Student at Triple Care Farm

The tables have turned on me and I am learning that eventually karma comes back and bites. No matter how soon or subtle. I won’t go into detail but today has been difficult learning that I have the tendency to act and speak before I think about the consequences of my actions. That then can cause harm and hurt other people who I do consider my friends. I am learning in gradual steps though and being here is proving to me that I am going down the right path.

The staff here especially, are helpful in helping me find the techniques that I obviously lack in learning that my mouth can be a very powerful weapon of destruction. I can’t wait till I can go back to my house though this afternoon and have some me time which I am not used to having.

Tomorrow will be an exciting day for me as am going to become a big sister again as my mum is having another baby. Boy or girl, that’s the big surprise for me. My new brother or sister is a great motivation for me being here, as well as the fact that I want a new life change. I already have one brother and sister, both younger, thinking that there sister will not be there for them during all there magic life moments. I want them to be proud of me and being here is making that happen as I am the only one that can change that.

28.07.08 Male Student Triple Care Farm

8 am wake up, I have been here two weeks now and only now am I getting used to the routine here at the farm. I didn’t want to get out of bed though because I could hear the rain on the roof. I did though. It has been a pretty relaxed day here to day because of the rain and our options are limited I suppose. This morning I rang up tafe and found out that I owe them $180 because of library books I didn’t return. Was quite upset with myself because my mum told me when I borrowed the books to make sure I returned them. She is always right HAHAHA. I guess that’s the reason I am here at the farm so I can tie up all the loose ends I have made and find a sense of direction.

There is such a wide diversity of students here and sometimes tension can get pretty thick because everyone is testing every one’s waters. Even me. My day has been pretty stress free though. Can’t guarantee that tomorrow will be because I’ve already caught on fairly quick that every day is different. Bad and good it’s the ones we learn from that make me go to sleep content at night. Cant wait till day program finishes even though I’m enjoying myself. I will be able to go up and have a hot shower and relax all afternoon. Have dinner then watch some TV and go to bed to start the day awaiting me tomorrow.

News: HMAS Darwin Sailors on the Farm

HMAS Dawin supports the Foundation in so many ways...

HMAS Darwin serving at Triple Care Farm

The Sir David Martin Foundation asked the Navy for help and the HMAS Darwin came to the rescue. They sent 11 enthusiastic sailors down to Triple Care Farm at Knights Hill, just outside Robertson.

They were there to lend a hand, and on a hundred acre farm there is always something that needs repairing or maintaining. The coldest day we have had in a long time did not stop them.

They undertook hard labour and were rebuilding fences, all in the brisk winter chill. The Manager of Triple Care Farm, Warren reflected, “the young people and the Navy had a productive day working along side each other. They were a great bunch of people and seemed to have a lot of fun.”
