‘A man with altitude’ - Adventurer and Mountaineer Andrew Lock
Sir David Martin Foundation Ambassador and friend Andrew Lock is the most accomplished high altitude mountaineer in Australian history. He is the only Australian, the first person in the Commonwealth, and just the 18th man in the world, to climb all fourteen of the world’s 8000 metre mountains. His achievements encompass 18 summits of those 8000 metre peaks, including Mt Everest (twice), more than four times that of any other Australian, placing him in a select group of the world's best alpinists. Additionally, Andrew accomplished the first Australian ascent of 6 of those mountains, a record that can never be broken.
In April Andrew is planning for his return to Mt Everest in the pre monsoon season of 2011 to achieve what he was unable to get a permit for last year. With luck he will obtain the permit to achieve his dream of traversing the mountain, if that permit is not available then he will still attempt a solo ascent of one side of the mountain without oxygen . With a departure set for April 4 2011.
Amazingly Andrew will back in time for the Sir David Martin Foundation fundraising abseil from the top of the AMP building ‘Urban Descent’ in October, if you register for the Urban Descent you will not only have the opportunity to meet with Andrew but Andrew will encourage and motivate you right over the edge of the 87 meters. For those who are extremely nervous Andrew will abseil beside you. Andrew is particularly passionate about young people in crisis. Motivation, rehabilitation and education are all part of the program Sir David Martin Foundation will be raising funds for in October Triple Care Farm in Bowral is an Award winning program that changes young lives in crisis into young lives with purpose. (The farms award winning program is run by Mission Australia).
