The opening of the 2009 Artworks! Exhibition was held last night ( 8th December) at “the Muse” in Ultimo. The title of this year’s exhibition was ‘I ART THEREFORE I AM’.
The ‘Artworks!’ program provides young people who are facing many and varied challenges in their lives the opportunity to explore and experience the pleasures and pitfalls of the creative process. This exhibition showcases students work from two semesters of “Artworks!’ and provides an opportunity for their families, friends and the general public to view and buy work produced by these talented young people.
Sir David Martin Foundation is proud to be involved with these wonderful young people and it is a great opportunity for us to catch up and hear the stories from students who have won our scholarships from the previous year.
Jannine Jackson General Manager of Sir David Martin Foundation spoke about the vision that the Sir David Marin had for the young people of NSW. Including some excerpts from his speech to the students of Scots College “these words” Jannine said “apply to all people and all students.”
Believe me please…
Strength is more enjoyable than weakness,
Happiness is more enjoyable than misery,
Honesty simpler to stick to than dishonesty,
Having an aim is more fun than drifting,
Building is healthier than knocking,
Knowledge is more useful than ignorance,
Unselfishness is warmer than selfishness,
Making friends is a better investment than making enemies,
So… decide what is worthwhile in life,
And go for it with all your might…
Then you’ll be worthy of your forefathers.
Rear Admiral Sir David Martin KCMG AO
Last nights opening of the exhibition was not only a delight to the eyes viewing these eclectic artworks, but a unique opportunity to speak to these students and hear their courageous stories. From living on
the streets to attending University, from eating disorders and drug addictions to completing their 2nd year art & design at TAFE may have gained the confidence to move forward with their life.
Finding their purpose in life was something they never thought they would be able to do.
As one young girl said in her thankyou speech:
Everyone deserves to be loved!
